An article in the Catoosa County News for July 25, 2007 by Staff Writer Randall Franks states that a $2,500 grant has been given to Catoosa County by the Georgia Civil War Commission. The funds are "for enhancements at the Little General capture site north of Ringgold." The site is currently large enough for about two vehicles to pull to the side of the road parallel to the CSX (old Western and Atlantic Railroad) right-of-way and in front of the General marker itself. "Commission Chairman John Culpepper [of Chickamauga] was on hand July 17 at the Governmental Building to congratulate the Catoosa County Board of Commissioners on the award and to encourage their efforts to prepare for the upcoming [American Civil War 150th] anniversary" "Culperrer said he hopes the county will consider providing some additional signage telling the story of Confederate participants in The Great Locomotive Chase." On another note, "Culpepper also urged commissioners to give support to the Patrick Cleburne Society in erecting a statue of Confederate General Patric Cleburne in Ringgold Gap. He said the statue will draw visitors from around the world." "Catoosa County Manager Ron Brown said he and members of his staff are reviewing the Little General site for the addition of parking. He added that work will begin on cleaning up the Ringgold Gap battlefield within a few days." "We are slowly but surely getting ready for the anniversary," said Catoosa Chairman Bill Clark. |
