Excerpts from the article by Kevin Cummings, staff writer:

Chickamauga Battlefield District Ranger, Jim Staub inspects paintball damage by two teenagers. The boys confessed to the crime Friday afternoon, January 9th, after "tips from the community" led "park investigators to the suspects."

It was initially reported that the damage estimate would be around $60,000. However, this figure was lowered to around $10,000. "Park personnel used pressure washers to remove red and green paint splotches from the monuments..." Chief Ranger Sam Weddle stated "there were a few permanent stains to a small number of markers and monuments."

Severe damage to park property can result in federal prosecution under the Archaeological Resource Protection Act with "each person involved in the crime [facing] felony charges resulting in up to a $100,000 fine and five years in jail." Ranger Weddle was unsure what the judicial outcome will be in this case.
