This marker was placed here in 1902 by the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway. Located on the Ooltewah-Ringgold Road two miles north of the Ringgold Railroad Depot, it marks the approximate spot the locomotive "General" came to a stop at the end of "The Great Locomotive Chase."

An identical marker (except for two words) is located in Kennesaw, Georgia near the museum housing the "General." The marker in Kennesaw says the locomotive was "captured" in the "morning" and the one in Ringgold says the locomotive was "abandoned" in the "afternoon."

This photo looks south along the W & A Railroad (CSX Railroad today). The Ooltewah-Ringgold road parallels the track here. The "General" marker is to the left between the road and the track which is still single track in this area. The track fades from sight as it nears Ringgold Gap.
