At the end of the Chattanooga Campaign in November 1863, Major General
William T. Sherman was placed in overall command of Union forces
in and around the Chattanooga area. He spent the winter months
building up supplies and reorganizing his armies in the Chattanooga and Dalton areas.
He knew that come Spring of 1864, his Union forces would resume the march South to fight General
Joseph Johnston's Confederate Army of Tennessee. If he could not defeat that army, his next best
objective would be: Atlanta. Click here to learn more about the exciting story of: The Atlanta Campaign, courtesy of The Georgia Civil War Commission, The Atlanta Civil War Round Table and author William R. Scaife. |
