JANUARY MEETING |
|
Today, the Battle of Mill Springs...........or Logan's Crossroads or Fishing Creek or
Beech Grove.............it is one of the Civil War battles with the greatest number of
names........is not given a great deal of attention. But, in January, 1862, as the
"second" year of the war began and advocates of both sides began to look for
the "opening" of the Spring campaign, the clash that occurred on the 19th not far
north of the upper portion of the Cumberland River in Southeastern Kentucky was
big news. That was particularly the case for Volunteer State residents. Not only
were a significant number of the participants on the Confederate side, and potentially
on the Union side, Tennesseans, but, for Nashvillians, the Cumberland was one of
the potential approach routes to the city and it was the route by which much of the
city's coal for its heat was carried. And, one of the Confederate commanders had
been prominent in the State's political life. And, for East Tennesseans, and Hamilton
Countians, the battle in the cold rain drew attention because one of the Confederate
units engaged, bloodied for the first time, was the 19th Tennessee in which were the
Hamilton Greys and the Marsh Blues. In recognition of the 150th Anniversary of the
Battle of Mill Springs, Dr. John D. Fowler will present "Bloodied Across the Cumberland:
East Tennessee's 19th Tennessee Infantry, C. S. A., & the Mill Springs Campaign."
Dr. Fowler is the author of Mountaineers in Gray: The Nineteenth Tennessee Volunteer
Infantry Regiment, C. S. A. (Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press, 2004) and has
spoken to the Round Table in the past on his work with the 19th. Tonight, though, he
will focus most specifically on the 19th and Mill Springs. Come out and learn about the
January 19, 1861, battle that was the talk of the town in the days following 150 years
ago. John D. Fowler holds a doctorate in History from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where he also served as a lecturer and as an editor on the Papers of Andrew Johnson project. Subsequently, he was Professor of History and Director of the Civil War Center at Kennesaw State University. Presently, Dr. Fowler is B. J. & Dicksie Bandy Chair of American History, and Director of the Bandy Heritage Center for Northwest Georgia at Dalton State College |

SCOUTS REPORTS! The holiday season reduced the number of Civil War related programs, but there were a few. Did anyone go to the Marsh House Victorian Candlelight Christmas in LaFayette or up to Knoxville to the East Tennessee History Center to see the "Why Lincoln Matters: Lincoln, The Constitution, and the Civil War" Special Exhibit or for the discussion and special showing of the movie The Conspirator about the Lincoln assassination co-conspirator Mary Surratt that was led by Lincoln Memorial University adjunct professor William E. Hardy at the East Tennessee History Center? If you did make it to one of those programs or if you attended another event of interest and you are able to be at our November meeting, give us a report. Remember, good intelligence is one of the keys to military success! |

eNEWSLETTER With yet another postage increase coming or likely, we do need to give some more thought to the mailing of a printed newsletter vs. one that is more exclusively distributed by email. I see almost no printed and mailed Round Table newsletters any more. Our email list is growing too. If you are still getting a printed copy and have email and would be willing to receive it just electronically, please let us know. |
