CHICKAMAUGA BATTLEFIELD
LAFAYETTE ROAD, FORT OGLETHORPE

SEPTEMBER MEETING
While James Longstreet’s men attacked George Thomas on Snodgrass Hill, the terrain of the Poe and Kelly farms along the LaFayette Road and the battle situation offered an opportunity for Confederate artillery to have a role more usual than they had had on the previous two days. Two battalions of Reserve Artillery were quick to grasp that opportunity, making it hot for Federals still in position around Kelly Field or trying to move from there to Snodgrass Hill. Supporting them and advancing as the day wound down was the division of Alexander Stewart. Join Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park Historian Jim Ogden for a ninety minute walk on parts of the Poe and Kelly farms and learn what happened there “after the breakthrough.”

This tour will begin at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center and will then car-caravan to Battleline Road for the on the ground portion of the tour. Comfortable, supportive footwear, clothing appropriate to the weather, water, and a flashlight (although we should be finished before dark) are recommended.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

NOTE SPECIAL TIME AND PLACE !
As has become the custom of the Round Table in September, since our September meeting has almost always fallen on one of the anniversary dates of the Battle of Chickamauga or a day or two just before, we'll this year and month again be IN THE FIELD for the meeting and on the Chickamauga Battlefield. Note the directions above and below AND THE SPECIAL TIME..........6:30 PM.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

SPEAKER'S FUND SUPPORT OF THE MONTH
Because we"ll be meeting "IN THE FIELD" this month, we'll not be doing the Speaker's Fund. Look for it again next month!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

SCOUTS REPORTS!
There have been a number of War Between the States related programs to consider attending in the last month. The Alexander Gardner photo exhibit closed at the Hunter; how many folks had a chance to see that exhibition during its run since May. Did anyone go up to Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville for the Tennessee Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission's 1861/2011 Seminar, "The First Shots of Tennessee's Civil War" with Dr. Gary Gallagher of the University of Virginia, Dr. Charles Bryan of the Virginia Historical Society, and Dr. Larry Whiteaker of Tennessee Tech University amongst the speakers? It certainly would have been worthwhile I'm sure to hear the presentations. Were you amongst the 84 (yes, eighty-four ! ) people who went with our last month's speaker Dan Cone to the site of Catoosa Springs? I wish I could have. If you did make it to one of those programs or if you attended another event of interest and you are able to be at our August meeting, give us a report. Remember, good intelligence is one of the keys to military success!

eNEWSLETTER
With yet another postage increase coming or likely, we do need to give some more thought to the mailing of a printed newsletter vs. one that is more exclusively distributed by email. I see almost no printed and mailed Round Table newsletters any more. Our email list is growing too. If you are still getting a printed copy and have email and would be willing to receive it just electronically, please let us know.
