SEPTEMBER MEETING |
|
Following the trend of the last few years, with our September meeting being on or
close to one of the dates associated with key events related to the Battle of
Chickamauga, we'll be in the field this month. Discussions in the past and at
our July and August meetings led to the decision at the August meeting to, this
month, meet at the historic Widow Martin Davis Home at Davis' Crossroad in McLemore's
Cove to visit that historic site and to talk about what did and did not occur in that
area a week or so before the Battle of Chickamauga. McLemore's Cove--a pocket on the east side of Lookout Mountain formed by a spur, Pigeon Mountain, from the main range. It holds the head waters of West Chickamauga Creek and the southern beginnings of Missionary Ridge. The path southeastward for William Rosecrans' center column, George Thomas' 14th Corps, led across the Cove toward LaFayette. This routing of Thomas was part of Rosecrans' broad front advance to force Braxton Bragg out of Chattanooga. And it worked. But as Bragg retreated southward, he began to realize how widely scattered elements of the Army of the Cumberland were. And, as the head of his passed through LaFayette, he learned that at least a division size Union element is coming over Lookout Mountain and into McLemore's Cove to the west. He decides to strike. Halting the southward move, Bragg orders first two and then four divisions into McLemore's Cove. But, where there should have at least been a corps size battle, none materialized. The problems in the command of the Army of Tennessee begin to reach their high, or low, point. Out numbering the Federals two, four, and two to one for two days, in retrospect, it is a major missed opportunity. In our on the ground visit to two of the key landmarks of the "what should have been" in McLemore's Cove, the Widow Martin Davis Home and Davis' Crossroads, we'll discuss the situation and what did and did not happen. Don't miss this unique opportunity! {IF YOU ARE UNCERTAIN ABOUT THE DIRECTIONS, I WILL BE LEAVING THE CHICKAMAUGA BATTLEFIELD VISITOR CENTER AT 5:15 PM TO GO DOWN TO THE COVE AND YOU ARE WELCOME TO CONVOY DOWN WITH ME IF YOU WOULD LIKE.} |

SPEAKER'S FUND SUPPORT OF THE MONTH There are three items this month for the Speaker’s Fund. The first this month is a set of five part Blue & Gray Magazine series on the campaign leading up to and including the Battle of Chickamauga that was authored by the REAL Chickamauga EXPERT, Dr. William Glenn Robertson. The second item is a copy of Dr. Timothy B. Smith's The Golden Age of Battlefield Preservation: The Decade of the 1890s and the Establishment of America's First Five Military Parks. The third item is a copy of the North & South magazine with articles on Five Forks, the night attack at Gettysburg, and a discussion of the affect of the rifled-musket. Two of the items this month were donated to the Round Table to support the Speaker’s Fund. To those donors go our thanks. Proceeds from the Speaker’s Fund go toward bringing speakers in from outside the area. Your support of the Speaker’s Fund is appreciated. |

SCOUTS REPORTS! There were just a couple of Civil War related programs here locally and in the region in the month between our August and September meetings. Did anyone take advantage of the National Park Service Fee Free Days on the 15th & 16th and go take in the Federal infantry programs at Point Park on the Lookout Mountain Battlefield? Or, did anyone attend Barbara Chandler's talk on historic Forest Hills Cemetery at the N. B. Forrest Camp meeting on the 25th? If you were able to attend any of these events or another one of note since our last meeting and you’re at our September meeting, give us a report. Good intelligence is one of the keys to military success! |
