AUGUST MEETING |
|
The City of Chattanooga has grown out over most of the area of the
Battles for Chattanooga. Only small portions of the Chattanooga Battlefields are preserved.
Following the action across the ground is a real challenge in the urban environment. But,
as many of you all know, it is possible to still find some places and you can surprise yourself
sometimes that through some study you can figure out some pieces of the puzzle; kind of like
our "in the field" meeting last month going down to the mouth of South Chickamauga Creek.
Most often, though, we still wonder where things were and how they moved across where there
are houses and businesses today instead of fields and woods. To help educate folks better about where the Battles for Chattanooga unfolded in the environment we see today, The Trust For Public Land and the Friends of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park successfully applied for a grant from the American Battlefield Protection Program to take the 1896 and 1901 Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park Commission Troop Movement maps (six total) for the Battles for Chattanooga and digitize them and then insert them in the Hamilton County Geographic Information System database, a version of which is on-line. Alexander Archeological Consulting has done the actual work over the last nine months or so. Through a series of presentations the week of August 17, the project is going to be "rolled out" to the public. Because that week includes the Round Table's meeting night and the Round Table meets in the Missionary Ridge area, one of the presentations was arranged for The McCallie School. That presentation will be at 6 PM instead of our normal 7 PM meeting time and it will be in The McCallie School Chapel and not the Millis-Evans Room of Caldwell Hall, but it will be our meeting. Come out and get an introduction to what should be a valuable source in the future. The other meetings that week are scheduled for: Monday, August 17, 3-3:45 PM at CreateHere, 55 East Main Street, Suite 105 Monday, August 17, 6-6:45 PM at CreateHere, 55 East Main Street, Suite 105 Thursday, August 20, 6-6:45 PM at the Chattanooga Nature Center, 400 Garden Road |

SEPTEMBER MEETING In recent years, our third Tuesday of September meeting has lined up with one of the anniversary dates for the Battle of Chickamauga and we've taken advantage of that alignment to actually be on the battlefield. Last year, when our meeting was on the 16th, Historian Rick Manion did a program on the horse and mule-flesh aspects of the battle. Over the last few months, a number of folks have been asking if we will do the same this year when our meeting is on September 15. At last month's meeting, the subject came up again and was discussed and the majority of those present wanted to meet in the field. Some possible places and subjects were discussed too. Someone asked about the possibility of doing something down in McLemore's Cove. I said that that was probably possible and folks present liked the idea if it could be worked out. Since the meeting, I've seen the manager of the Frank Shaw Trust property, the Widow Davis House property, at Davis' Crossroads, and he said a visit shouldn't be a problem. I'll poll folks present at this month's meeting and if folks like the idea, I'll line it up and we'll plan on having our September meeting in the field, on the field of one of the pre-battle engagements, where one Chickamauga ranger long ago said the Battle of Chickamauga should have happened (not because he knew a lot about the history and the opportunity Bragg had there, but because he felt McLemore's Cove was so pretty and would be a far better place for a park than where it is ! ! ! ? ! ? ! ? !). |
