JUNE MEETING

"Friday [May] 26th, [1865]...--...We arrived at Booths point a little after day light 13 of us got off and soon struck for our respective homes a part of the road was pretty mudy but we pushed on arriving at Dyersburg before 11 oclk. I took dinner with my revered friend G W D Harris D.D. I left his house about one oclk. passed through Dyersburg which had been afflicted with a pretty heavy burning the night before I proceeded towards home meeting a number of old friends acquaintances all of whom appeared to be glad to see me I arrived at home a little after sunset found my family up and in tolerable health except my wife who is afflicted with dispepsa I felt in my heart to thank God I was at home once more where if permited to remain undisturbed I expect to spend my days let them be many or few..." --Capt. Alfred T. Fielder, 12th Tennessee, age 51, veteran of four years of war.

April and May of 1865, after four years of brutal combat, brought an end to the South's bid for independence. Men and boys who had become soldiers now faced becoming civilians. For most, that long day had finally come and it was embraced happily. All faced circumstances that required transition from the regimented life of the military to a pace with different challenges. That "going home," that "When Johnny Come Marching Home," is an aspect of the war little noted. The typical narrative is the surrenders at Appomattox and Bennett Place followed by the resumption of the westward march of U. S. History. But, what was it like to be one of those soldiers who relatively suddenly stacked arms and found himself back in the comfort of home. Our speaker this evening, University of Virginia History student Evan Jones will explore that very experience. A California native, Evan is captivated by War Between the States history and as a motivated student at Mr. Jefferson's university, he is challenging himself by taking upper class courses even in his first year and by auditinig graduate level American history seminars. "Going Home" will be his under-graduate thesis. While he is in summer school this summer, in previous summers he has worked at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park (and attended our Round Table meetings), Vicksburg National Military Park, and Appomattox National Historical Park.

Come out for the meeting and "go home" with some of the soldiers of the war....
